Volleyball: Olympic gold-winning coach Tillie named new Japan boss

TOKYO (Kyodo) — The Japan Volleyball Association announced Monday that Olympic gold medal-winning French coach Laurent Tillie will take charge of the Japanese men’s national team.

The 60-year-old, who steered France to men’s volleyball gold at the Tokyo Games, is currently the head coach of Osaka Bluteon in Japan’s SV.League.

Tillie played for France at the 1988 Seoul and 1992 Barcelona Olympics. He became head coach of France in 2012 and stepped down after the Tokyo Olympics in 2021.

Previous Japan coach Philippe Blain, also from France, resigned after guiding the men’s team to a quarterfinal exit at the Paris Games this past summer.

The JVA will hold an online press conference about the appointment next Monday.
